Fortum will serve as the main partner of the Hydrogen Summit & Expo 2026. First launched in 2025, the event once again brings together key players in the hydrogen economy to discuss industry development, investments, and technological solutions.

A key meeting point for the hydrogen industry

The Hydrogen Summit & Expo plays a vital role in raising awareness and creating new opportunities in the sector.
"Above all, we expect the event to foster constructive dialogue that moves from talk to concrete projects and solutions. We especially want to focus on how these projects will be financed and how successful businesses can be built on hydrogen", says Senior Manager Eveliina Laitinen from Fortum’s hydrogen team.
"Events raise awareness, attract investments, bring in customers, and encourage hydrogen users to join the dialogue on large-scale projects in Finland. In addition to capital, we need a shared vision and effective regulation, and we welcome input from investors and experts", adds Senior Manager P2X Project Origination Jarkko Toropainen, from Fortum.

Why Finland is built for hydrogen

Finland has many strengths in the hydrogen economy – affordable electricity, a strong power grid, renewable energy potential, biogenic carbon, efficient logistics, and a skilled workforce.
"Yet, investments are held back by limited capital, cautious customers, and our own modesty in showcasing strengths. The hydrogen market is growing, and we want more international players to see Finland’s potential. Most enablers are already in place – we just need to explain and advertise them with confidence", says Toropainen.

From pilots to partnerships

Fortum has the largest renewable electricity project development portfolio in Finland, underlining its belief in large-scale electrification. This positions the company as an electricity producer, network builder, and technology developer in the hydrogen economy.
A concrete step forward is the Kalla hydrogen test center in Loviisa. The plant is expected to produce its first clean hydrogen as early as this year, with a two-year testing period starting in early 2026.
"Piloting is a crucial phase. We need to understand what real work requires and what challenges arise. The goal is to move step by step toward increasingly ambitious projects", explains Laitinen.
Fortum has also signed an agreement to supply renewable electricity to P2X Solutions’ hydrogen production plant in Harjavalta – another milestone in building a clean hydrogen value chain.
"We are ready to enable the creation of large-scale hydrogen production plants and provide them with clean electricity. We also see ourselves as a natural local integrator, connecting different players and supporting the hydrogen economy with services such as PPA sales, site development, and energy optimization for industrial investors", Toropainen notes.

Building cooperation across industries

Fortum develops hydrogen solutions together with the steel and metal, forest, chemical, and transport industries. The aim is to offer tailored, scalable hydrogen and energy solutions from a single source.
"Our core operations comprise efficient low-carbon power generation, customer services, and heating and cooling. To fully benefit from the hydrogen economy, a multidisciplinary approach is needed", says Laitinen.

From dialogue to delivery

In Fortum’s strategy, hydrogen is in the exploration phase, with the company actively involved in research projects and coalitions. Drawing on decades of expertise in low-carbon energy, Fortum supports the development of new hydrogen concepts and promotes cross-sectoral collaboration to unlock the full potential of the hydrogen economy. Hydrogen is a natural extension of Nordic Energy – produced with Fortum’s electricity, it carries the region’s renewable power into industries, transport, and everyday life.
"We have a clear vision: when production, distribution, and use come together at the same table, real solutions and real business are created. It is time to move from words to action", concludes Toropainen.
