About the Speaker

Lukas Trommler is a research associate at the Chair of Construction Machinery at TUD Dresden University of Technology. After graduating his studies at TUD with a diploma degree in mechanical engineering, he joined the department in 2022. With a strong focus on non-road mobile machinery (NRMM), Lukas Trommler was responsible for managing national research projects. His work focuses on topics related to alternative drive concepts for mobile applications, including the use of hydrogen for fuel cells or H2-ICE. He is also involved in the dimensioning of drive train configurations for hydrogen and battery driven machines and the work process dependent energy demand calculation on construction sites to ensure a resilient energy supply. Furthermore, he investigates the suitability of H2 components in order to qualify them for the robust use in non-road applications. Since 2024, he is responsible for the management, organization, and content design of the HZwo working group “Hydrogen for Non-Road Mobile Machinery”, in which more than 40 industry participants and research organisations are represented. The goal is to identify industrial challenges for the use of H2 in mobile applications and close the gap in form of national and international R&D projects.

Off the Road – Application and Value Creation Potentials of Hydrogen in Mobile Working Machines

While the use of hydrogen in road transport and industry is increasingly in the spotlight, mobile working machines – such as construction, municipal, and special-purpose vehicles – still offer largely untapped potential for decarbonization and value creation. The panel highlights current technological developments, pilot applications, and cooperation in this field, particularly the interplay between research, industry, and innovation clusters in Finland and Germany. The panel aims to strengthen European cooperation, demonstrating how regional clusters and research networks complement each other to drive the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in special and niche applications – practical, innovative, and application-oriented.
